As a child I grew up on a farm near Lake Alma, Saskatchewan that raised cattle and grew grain. Like most farm families we had a farm dog, our dog didn’t have much of a purpose other than greet guests and chase cattle once in awhile.

Once I turned fifteen I attended Weyburn Comprehensive High School in Saskatchewan and rented a room from a family in town. The family I  stayed with had an Irish Setter and German Shepherd, the Irish Setter was more of a pet than anything however the German Shepherd and I quickly became friends. I noticed that the German Shepherd had habits that I had never seen in a dog before. As a smoker I had to go outside to have a cigarette, but before I even headed towards the door she was up and waiting for me to head outside, but if I was just getting up to head to the bathroom upstairs she wouldn’t move. It was a little eerie and sometimes I wondered how she knew where I was going, sometimes even before I knew.

I often went home for the weekends and on one Sunday afternoon, after I returned from the farm, I laid down on the couch and fell asleep. I woke up later that evening to find that everyone else had already gone to bed except the Shepherd. She had stayed on the floor beside me and when I got up to go to my room she followed me, I found it odd that she followed me as she had never done that before.

The next morning my landlord asked me if I was okay and when I replied that I had been feeling sick she explained she knew that because her Shepherd had babysat me while I slept. At first I did not believe her because she told me how the dog had stayed beside me the whole night, and that every half hour she would get up and lay her head on my chest and listen before laying back down on the floor beside me, which sounded unbelievable to m

A few months later I was visiting a family friend. They had a little boy and a 6-month-old German Shepherd. The little boy was sick and fell asleep on the couch and their pup watched over their son the same way my landlord had said their dog watched over me. I was excited and started asking them about their shepherd, and from what I learned both dogs were bred to be working dogs.

Working lines include family dogs, Police K9s, Search and Rescue, Medical Service dogs, pipe line locating, protection, and more. Working dogs are highly intelligent, loyal and protective, therefore they are not just good at their jobs, but they also make wonderful family dogs. With a quality breeding program like ours, they are also healthier and have a longer life span.

I trust my dogs completely and never question them when they alert me to something out of the ordinary.

Some of our pups have been taken care of by families of City Police, RCMP, and families with medical needs including those with depression, autism, and seizures as they are great at helping those that need it.

It is important for us to maintain relationships with all of our puppy owners. My goal as a breeder is to provide as much support to our families as possible. Because of this I always respond to calls, emails, and texts from our pup owners. Besides training tips, we help our pup owners address their concerns and correct behavioral issues. We take great pride in our breeding program and strive to ensure that owning and training a German Shepherd is a rewarding experience.

Previous Pup Owner Testimonial

"It wasn’t until I purchased a pup from Selte Shepherds that I was able to hold my grandkids for the first time. I have a seizure condition and I never knew when or how severe the seizures would be. At around 6 months old my pup from Selte Shepherds started to warn me when I was going to have a seizure. A friend of mine noticed this and suggested I get some formal training for my pup. I cannot thank Selte Shepherds enough. Getting a puppy from them brought joy and freedom back into my life."
